~ Out for a Ride ~
Entertainment was pretty simple in 1928... "Going out for a car ride", especially following a BIG snowstorm occupied the Gruler Family as shown in the five photos below. In the first photo below were the Gruler Girls (from top) Jean (Glaza), Katharine (Worthen), Louise (Stevens), and Dorothy (Miles), standing on the snowbank that rose in front of the public beach area. Buildings in the Village of Walloon Lake behind the girls were on the left of the road, the Grey Gull, Browers, and the New Walloon Hotel, with Ransom's Bowling Alley at the end of the street. On the right of the two-tracked snowy road was Renwick's house (Sunset Lodge). The names listed may not have been the names at that particular time in 1928, but were the owners over the years that are familiar to me, and as I recognize them. ~ Karla Howard Buckmaster

and then stopped to show the height of the snowbanks between Harbor Springs and Petosksey.

Former Detroit Tigers catcher Bill Freehan lives on Walloon Lake.
SPORTS PEOPLE; Freehan Loses House
Published: December 11, 1988
The three-story log house overlooking Walloon Lake on Michigan's Lower Peninsula seemed a fitting residence for a former baseball star, so Bill Freehan, the former catcher for the Detroit Tigers, felt right at home when he and his wife moved in on Thursday.
But while they spent their second night in their new house, it burned to the ground, forcing the Freehans into the 10-degree night.
According to firefighters, the fire, which broke out in the basement shortly before midnight, almost destroyed a van that had been parked out front.
''Those cedar logs burned like matchsticks,'' said Doug Carver, chief of the Bear Creek Township Fire Department, who described the 47-year-old Freehan as ''kind of disgusted.''(AP)

"To Dave (Russell)
Thanks always for putting the catcher's glove
back together - Great Job!

Bill Freehan's note shown at left, and quoted above, to Dave Russell (born in Walloon Lake villiage) of Dave's Boot and Shoe Repair in Petoskey, Michigan, is in reference to the catcher's glove that Bill Freehan used in the 1968 World Series Game. Dave restored the catcher's mit that Bill Freehan used to make the last out in the game... The Detroit Tigers won the 1968 World Series. Dave Russell is very proud of this note, and tells that the catcher's mit is now in the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown NY.

Bill Freehan passed away 19 August 2021 at age 79 after long battle with dementia.
The 19 August 2021 Detroit Free Press announced: "Freehan had suffered from dementia for several years, spending the last few under hospice care in his northern Michigan home. Freehan is best remembered for that 1968 season, in which he caught 155 regular-season games — including nearly all of Denny McLain’s 31 victories — before handling World Series MVP Mickey Lolich’s three complete-game victories in the Fall Classic. As the runner-up to McLain for the American League MVP award that year, Freehan posted career highs in home runs (25), RBIs (84) and runs scored (73)."
