Muhqua Nebis A compilation of Legends of Walloon by Dorothy Munson Krenrich and published by Walloon Trust, mentioned on page 2, a Walloon Lake School: "The Indian children attended the one-room public school located on the east side of Resort Pike a short distance north of the entrance to South Indian Garden Road. Perhaps the best known of these Indian families were the Boltons whose children, Richard and Prudence, were close friends of Ernest and Sunny Hemingway."

Pinky McCutcheon remembers:
"The Walloon village kids actually attended Walloon Lake School for the first week of kindergarten before being switched to Clarion School (see below). There must have been a population imbalance.
Clarion School (1947-1950), Clarion, Michigan

The Melrose Township Unit School Building was built in 1949,
combining the two room school of Clarion and the two room school of Walloon Lake.
In 1953, according to the yearbook, the enrollment was 123 pupils.

“The following May, in 1878, Melrose District No. 1 school was organized. John T. Collins notified all six qualified voters in the district personally. They were: Merritt Bowles, W.M. Bowles, John Jones Jr., Wm. Jones, John Foglebery and Richard Pucket. Wm. Bowles was named chairman, John Jones Jr. director, Wm Jones moderator, and John T. Collins treasurer. The district covered nine sections of the township, namely 19, 20, 21, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, and 33: three sections wide by three sections long. At their annual meeting in 1878, they voted to raise $300 to build a school, voted to have four months school by male or female teacher and to raise $50.00 for incidental expenses. They voted to get five cords of wood, beech or maple, fitted for stove to be cut and piled on the school site. It was let to Merritt Bowles at $0.54 per cord. It was also voted to pay $6.00 to J.T. Collins for the use of his house for the school. Melissa Fletcher taught the first school the first year and had three pupils and received $60.00 for her services. Her pupils were John E. Jones age 12, Lillain Jones age 11, and Elizabeth Collins age 10. The other children on the census wo did not attend were Clarence Jones 17, Christina Holm 13, and E. Puckett 6. Spelling, reading writing, arithmetic, and grammar were taught. This term of school was of course held in the Collins home. In September 1879 Isaac Purkey and Wm. Ellis were appointed as a committee to find a suitable site for this new schoolhouse. They were successful and an acre of land was purchased from Anthony Jepson. They voted to build a frame schoolhouse 18 ft. by 24 ft. with 12 ft. studding, celled overhead and ceiled 4 feet from the floor all around. To be covered with siding outside with necessary door and windows. A.D. Joles, John Jones Jr. and Wm. Ellis were to act as a committee to see to clearing the site and building the school.
By this time the population had grown enough so that there was one more school added to Melrose Township: Clarion, named after Clarion, Pennsylvania, by Mr. Darrah, was District No. 2. This school opened in the fall of 1880. The FiRST teacher was Libbie Middleton, a mere slip of a girl, who taught eight pupils: Sam, Media, and Pearl Hass, Lou, Bertha, and Grace Foote, and also Marion Darrah. It was a little frame building at the edge of the swamp, straight down from the cemetery.
By 1883, Melrose Township had four frame school houses and 79 schoolchildren. District No. 3 by Hettrick (Haw—-?) and District No. 4 near the Pucket farm; the present Raymond Ecker home. The pupils who went there say that they could see out through the knot holes and it was set up on cedar poles. The desks were fastened on the walls. They too, only had school during the summer months. This school was badly needed as the children had to go either to Clarion or to the Jones school. Either way, it meant miles of sloshing through mud when it was wet, over a winding trail over the hills and through valleys. Dense heavy timber was on both sides of the trail. The sun’s rays were unable to penetrate the thick foliage of the trees to warm the earth or pupil. The Wardrop family, Larsons, the Fogelberrys, Puckets and Todds made up this neighborhood.
School District No. 1 voted not to have school in 1889. The children of the original settlers had grown beyond school age and there were not enough young children that could walk that far to school.
About 1892 Mark and Ed Easton built the first half of the Bear Lake school just back of Fort Wayne Camp. It replaced the school near the Pucket farm. The Pucket homestead had changed hands and the Sherk family were the new owners. The new Bear Lake school would include the tiny village of Tolcott as well as its former pupils.
At a special meeting in October of 1895, it was voted to move District No. 1 school house to a new site in order to accommodate the most people, and to resume school. They hadn’t had any school for the past nine years. It was moved to a site on the H.O. Easton place, E.A. Easton tore it down, moved the material and put it up again ready for plaster for the sum of $94.00.
In 1902 Clarion school burned. It was rebuilt in 1903.
About 1907, after many an argument and much discussion about moving District No. 1 or the Jones school, for the second time, it was voted down, and as a result the Curfew school was organized in 1908. It was erected on the site known as the old banking ground at Curfew. In 1911 this school also burned and had to be rebuilt. They started having only summer school as did the other schools.
The little school in Clarion was not nearly large enough to hold the pupils that were enrolled and the first and second grades were going to school at the home of Mrs. Libby Middleton Hass, who had married since she taught the first pupils of the school. There had been the Blood brothers mill that made broom handles, rolling pins, etc. There was the Miller sawmill on a site near the present Hinkley place. The Merrill mill which later moved to Tolcott and the Sheatsley mill which stood near the railroad on which was later built the Narner place. All together it had increased the school attendance greatly, so in 1897 Ed and Mark Easton built a two-story school. One room up and one room down. The little school was sold to the Dunkard people for a church."

~ TEACHERS ~
The Clarion School was built about 1880 about the same time that the railroad reached Clarion.
Libby Middleton, 15 or 16 years old, was the first Clarion teacher of eight or nine pupils.
(Libby married John Hass.)
The second Clarion School teacher was Elizabeth Cooper who became Mrs. Sherman Wheeler Jr.
According to the above article, by 1890, Mr. A.C. Madlem had taught in Clarion.
The third teacher was Cora Chew who taught six years, eventually marrying a student William Wheeler.
The original Clarion two story school house burned in 1901.
Prior to the building of the two story school which burned, church and school were held in that same building.
The Clarion School, close to The Foot where the Walloon Lake School ultimately was built,
was the school for many Walloon Lake area children for many years, as shown in the photos below.

The Bear Lake School was built about 1892 on M-75, near to Jensen Road.
Walloon Lake was originally named Bear Lake, so the school, eventually, was also known as Walloon Lake School.
(Mark and Ed Easton were the builders of the Bear Lake School.)

Rosemary Renwick remembers that her mother Lucile Spalding Renwick taught at the Walloon Lake school, up by Jensen Road. Rosemary was told that her Uncle Russell would go up early in the morning in the winter to build the fire to get the building somewhat warmed up before school started. "Mayme Scroggie [Walter Master's aunt] taught some or all of the time Lucile taught there; Mom had 5-8 grades and Mayme taught the younger kids, and as Mom said, 'I never got a kid who couldn't read!'" See a photo of Mayme Scroggie, two photos below on left.

Barb Burns remembers she was one of the ones who attended the two-room Bear Lake School while the new Melrose Township School was being built. She attended the Bear Lake School for kindergarten, and had to take a rug to school to place on the floor for a nap. The students played in the woods during recess times. The cloak room which was the entry between the two class rooms was impressive with a hundred hooks for hanging coats; two rows, one up high for the big kids, and the other under that row for the little kids. Barb is not sure that she attended first grade at the Bear Lake School or in the new Melrose Township School in the village. She remembers that the new school building reminded the students of a chicken coop shape, so some of the students called it a chicken coop. Even after the new school was completed, the bus garage at the two room school was used as the bus garage, for the two busses, for several years. Two buses were needed; one bus for kids living on the south side of the Bear River, and one bus for kids on the north side of the Bear River. It took Barb an hour to get home from school every day, and she hated that ride. Both bus drivers were Rays... Ray Fineout and Ray Goodwin.

Perhaps this was Ray Fineout who drove bus for the Walloon Lake Schools,
and possibly the bus had been housed in Si's Marine Service as the sign states.

This movie below was digitized from an 8 mm camera film made about 1963 or after. The 1963 date is closer than the posted 1961 date, after finding the article above acknowledging that Mr. Charles Crosser was the new principal in 1963, and Mr. Crosser is in the video below. The Walloon Lake School had a picnic at the Walloon Lake Park beside the Bear River. The people in the movie include Teachers, Principal Crosser, Students, Parents, Bus Drivers, and Students.

The Wheaton Family lived on the shores of the North Arm in the late 1800s. Dean Wheaton in his book The Wheatons of Northern Michigan, wrote about his relative Lillie Mary Hope Bacon Wheaton: "Lillie was enumerated in the 1920 census in Friendship Twp, Emmet Co, Michigan with her husband and three children. Lillie was then working as a public school teacher. Lillie taught school at the Resort (SD No. 3) School grades 1-8. Warner Wheaton and Lucy Bacon were both among her students".... The school as listed on the 1902 Plat showed "It was on the top of the big sand bank at the top of the hill on the east side of Resort Pike up from Walloon Lake." It was south of Depew Road.
The photo above is recognized as the same photo on page 81 from the Resort Township Remembers book
put together by a group of Resort Township residents.
The photo was labeled as follows: "Resort Schools picnic at Lake Grove".

The photo was labeled as follows: "Resort Schools picnic at Lake Grove".
The Resort Township Remembers book on page 73 explained through a very early 1900's newspaper article, that the article was likely about the photo above, or having to do with a very similar activity. With the Lake Grove label for the photo above, and reference to the Lake Grove Hotel in the article, probably the group had gathered at the Resort Township Lake Grove Hotel which was located on Walloon Lake... on the east shore of the west arm, seven miles southwest from Petoskey.
"'In the early 1900's all the schools in the township were invited to Lake Grove Hotel for a picnic at the end of each school year. (Taken from June 6, 1903, Petoskey Daily Resorter) "The picnic given by teachers the Misses Bacon, Dodge, Jennings and Benham with their pupils at Rehkopf's grove was a grand success in every way. The pupils were taken in wagons trimmed with flags and evergreens. A goodly number of participants were in attendance. About 150 took part in the dinner. Thirty-five enjoyed the boat ride to the "Foot" and back. All were happy. We think the teachers should be commended for the day's enjoyment for it was indeed a hard task for them.' This invitation continued for many years.
In later years, the Grange invited all the schools in the districts to their hall for a Special Day at the close of the school year. Games and races were conducted with awards given to the winners. It was disappointing when this annual event was discontinued in 1935.
