A 4 March 2022 article by Petoskey News Review reporter Tess Ware reported "Walloon Lake Association and Conservancy awarded national accreditation." Across the Unite States more than 450 other accredited land trusts already exist. "The association currently manages 51 preserves, 10 conservation easements and six miles of shorelines and streams, on and around Walloon Lake, which comes to more than 2,219 acres of land." A large 2022 goal for the association is through a grant, to install a permanent boat wash station at Jones Landing on Walloon Lake, along with other water quality goals.
William A. Heisel long-time Walloon Lake resident passed away 23 May 2022. His obituary stated some of his many involvements. "Bill and Pat enjoyed skiing together as a young couple and were among the early skiers at Boyne Mountain in northern Michigan and skiing became a family sport. Their house on Walloon Lake, MI was where the family spent their winter weekends skiing and all summer playing on the lake. His garden at the Walloon house was a passion of his. He could often be seen riding around on his golf cart with a grandchild or two, tending to the garden or fighting the weeds. Bill became passionate about conservation of the lake and helped found the land preservation arm of the Walloon Lake Association and Conservancy. As president, he worked with the lake’s five townships to pass ordinances that restrict funnel development and that mission continues to this day. The pristine beauty of the lake and its surrounding woodlands and wetlands were dear to his heart."
